When, in early 2000, recently arrived at Radio Maendeleo, a radio station in Bukavu, South Kivu province, began "to give the microphone to women raped", there was not even the word rape in the local language, journalist had to borrow from neighboring Tanzania: ubakaji. "I wanted to talk - he explains - because knobs & knockers they were afraid of being rejected by the community: rape was a taboo."

"Our challenge was to make sure that the raped women were not stigmatized by society: we had to make everyone understand that rape is not a shame for the victim but for the community," says the journalist.
